A GMT watch earns its fourth hand when you actually use it. Perhaps you want to know whether someone abroad is awake before calling. Perhaps you travel occasionally and prefer to keep home time on the dial. Either way, the movement needs to make that second time zone easy to read and straightforward to set.
The DG3804 is a Chinese automatic GMT movement with a separately adjustable 24-hour hand, a date display, manual winding and hacking seconds. In our watches, it has 21 jewels, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers approximately 42 hours of power reserve.
We use it in THE PEPSI, our 39.5mm Vintage Red-Blue GMT. Its red GMT hand and faded 24-hour bezel give the movement a clear job: keep another place's time visible without crowding the dial.

The accuracy figure is our workshop acceptance target for the finished watch. It describes a different thing from a movement manufacturer's factory tolerance or the rate a particular owner records during a week of wear. We explain that distinction below.
What is the DG3804?
The DG3804, also encountered under the Mingzhu name, is an affordable mechanical movement built to provide ordinary timekeeping, a date and a second time zone through one crown.

Its automatic winding system uses the motion of a rotor to replenish the mainspring as the watch moves on your wrist. Manual winding lets you start it from the crown after it has stopped. Pulling the crown to the time-setting position stops the seconds hand, allowing you to synchronise the watch with a reference clock. That last function is what watch specifications call hacking.
The GMT display uses a fourth central hand. While the ordinary hour hand travels around the dial twice a day, the GMT hand completes one circuit in 24 hours. It therefore needs a 24-hour scale, which THE PEPSI carries on its bezel.
The mechanism behind that slower hand is quite direct. A transfer wheel carries motion from the hour wheel to the GMT wheel at a 2:1 ratio. The setting mechanism also gives the date quick-set wheel two jobs: changing the direction of crown rotation brings different setting gears into use. A photographic examination of the DG3804 mechanism shows how this arrangement accommodates winding, date setting, GMT adjustment and time setting within three crown positions.
That is the useful engineering in the DG3804. The extra indication remains tied to the same timekeeping mechanism, while its offset can be adjusted for another time zone.
How to read the DG3804 GMT hand
Start with the bezel's triangle or 24 marker at 12 o'clock. Read local time from the ordinary hour and minute hands. Read the other time zone from the GMT hand against the bezel.

The numbers occupy different positions from those on a normal 12-hour dial:

At 16:00, for example, the GMT hand points to 16 on the bezel, between the ordinary 7 and 8 o'clock positions. At 16:30, it sits halfway between 16 and 17. The hand moves through the hour; it does not wait at one number until the next hour arrives.
For two locations separated by whole hours, the ordinary minute hand also gives you the minutes in the second time zone. If the main hands show 10:10 and the GMT hand sits just beyond 16, the second time is 16:10.
GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, but you can set the hand to whichever reference time is useful to you. Home time, a colleague's time zone or UTC are all sensible choices. The movement does not know which city you have chosen, and seasonal clock changes require a manual adjustment when they alter the offset you are tracking.
What does the rotating bezel add?
Turning the bezel changes the scale beneath the GMT hand. You can therefore read another offset without resetting the hand itself. For a temporary check, rotate the scale until it represents the required time, read it, then return the triangle to 12.
On THE PEPSI the bezel rotates in one direction. Work with that direction instead of forcing it backwards.
There is one practical limit to the often repeated claim that a rotating bezel gives a GMT watch three time zones. Once you move its only 24-hour scale, that scale displays the newly selected zone. The GMT hand still retains its original setting, but reading the original zone now requires remembering the offset or returning the bezel to its starting point.
Caller GMT or traveller GMT?
The DG3804 is a caller GMT. You adjust the 24-hour hand separately to establish another time zone while leaving ordinary local time in place.
Imagine that you work locally but speak to a colleague six hours ahead. Set the main hands to your time and the GMT hand six hours ahead. Once set, both displays advance together. A glance at the red hand tells you whether your colleague is still within working hours.
A traveller GMT puts the independent adjustment on the ordinary local hour hand instead. On arrival, you move that hand to the destination's hour while retaining your reference time. The Miyota 9075 is an example of this arrangement.
For frequent changes of destination, the traveller layout has an obvious convenience. The DG3804 suits someone whose main display usually stays on one time zone and whose fourth hand tracks another.
You can still travel with it. Set the ordinary hands to destination time, then restore the GMT hand to home time. That takes more adjustment than a jumping local hour hand, particularly if you want to preserve precise seconds synchronisation. The difference is in the setting routine, and it is worth understanding before choosing a watch.
How to wind and set a DG3804 watch
There are three operating positions. If the watch has a screw-down crown, unscrew it before using them; releasing the threads is separate from pulling the crown into a setting position. Operate the crown with the watch dry.

The shared first position is the detail to remember. You do not need an extra crown position for the GMT hand.

Starting a stopped watch
Take the watch off your wrist so you can operate the crown without pulling it sideways. With the crown in its winding position, turn it clockwise in gentle, even turns to put energy into the mainspring. Once the watch is running, continued winding adds reserve and normal wear replenishes it.
The seconds hand starting to move tells you the movement has enough energy to run. It does not mean the full reserve has been restored. If the watch will spend much of the day on a desk, give it some additional manual winding instead of relying on a brief shake.
Setting the date, local time and GMT offset
A useful habit is to make quick-set adjustments with the ordinary hands at 6:30, away from the overnight date change. The following sequence also establishes the correct morning or afternoon setting.
- Find morning. Pull the crown to the second click and advance the ordinary hands until the date changes. Continue forwards to 6:30. You now have a known morning reference.
- Set yesterday's date. Return to the first click. Turn the crown gently to identify the direction that advances the date, then continue to yesterday's date. The opposite direction operates the GMT adjustment. There is no reason to force either control.
- Establish the GMT offset. Keeping the ordinary hands at 6:30, use the GMT-setting direction to set the other zone's corresponding time. If it is two hours ahead, place the GMT hand at 08:30 on the aligned bezel. If it is three hours behind, use 03:30.
- Set today's local time. Pull to the second click again. Advance the ordinary hands forwards through midnight so the date becomes today's date, then continue to the correct local time. For an afternoon setting, pass noon as well. The GMT hand advances with the movement and preserves the offset you established.
- Synchronise and close. Use the stopped seconds hand to synchronise with a reference clock, then push the crown fully in. Secure a screw-down crown gently without overtightening it.
This routine keeps the date and GMT quick-setting work together at a sensible point in the calendar cycle. It also avoids a common mistake: setting the ordinary hands twelve hours out, which makes the date change around lunchtime.
When you only want to change the GMT offset, the first click provides that adjustment. Keep the same habit of doing quick-set work away from the overnight calendar change. A temporary bezel adjustment is convenient when you only need to check another place's time.
DG3804 accuracy: what ±15 seconds per day means
Our acceptance target for a finished DG3804 watch is a measured rate within ±15 seconds per day. The watch is checked on a timing machine in three positions before dispatch. The accompanying targets are amplitude above 220 degrees and beat error below 0.6 milliseconds. These checks form part of our watch assembly and inspection process.
A timing machine listens to the escapement and measures its behaviour over a short interval. The daily rate is an extrapolation of that measurement. The instrument can therefore report seconds per day without the watch having spent a full day on the machine. Rate, amplitude and beat error are separate measurements, as illustrated by Witschi's watch timing equipment.
Your wrist gives the movement a changing set of conditions. The watch moves between positions, the mainspring winds and unwinds, and periods of activity alternate with rest. A rate recorded in one position on a timing machine is one part of that picture.
For an owner, the useful test is simple: synchronise the watch, wear it normally for several days, and compare it with the same reference at the same time each day. Record the accumulated difference before resetting it. For example, a gain of 50 seconds over five days works out to an average gain of 10 seconds per day during that period.
A steady gain or loss gives a watchmaker something to work with when considering regulation. Erratic behaviour, repeated stopping or a sudden large change deserves investigation of the cause. Moving the regulator is not a substitute for finding out why the behaviour changed.

What approximately 42 hours of power reserve means
Power reserve is the running time available from a fully wound mainspring when no more energy is added. For our DG3804 watches, the stated reserve is approximately 42 hours.
In everyday terms, that is enough to take the watch off overnight and return to it the following day. It also explains why a stopped watch after an entire weekend off the wrist is unsurprising. Forty-two hours from 8 pm on Friday reaches 2 pm on Sunday, well before Monday morning.
That example begins with a full wind. A watch worn briefly during a quiet day may start its time on the bedside table with less energy stored.
If you rotate between several watches, occasional winding and resetting will be part of ownership. Hacking seconds, manual winding and the shared date/GMT setting position make that routine manageable. Someone who needs a watch to keep running through several days off the wrist should give reserve more weight when comparing movements.
What do 21 jewels and 21,600 vph tell you?
The DG3804 we use has 21 jewels. Movement jewels are hard, low-friction bearing surfaces used at selected points in the mechanism. They serve a mechanical purpose; their number is not a standalone score for accuracy, longevity or quality.
The frequency is 21,600 vibrations per hour, also written as 21,600 bph. Dividing by 3,600 gives six beats each second. Because a full oscillation contains two beats, the balance frequency is 3 Hz.
On the dial, this produces the familiar appearance of a mechanical seconds hand advancing in small steps. It is a different visual cadence from a movement running at 28,800 vph, which makes eight beats per second.
Frequency alone does not tell you which finished watch will keep better time. Adjustment, condition and behaviour across positions matter too. A specification table explains the movement's design; it does not replace an assessment of the individual watch.
DG3804, DG3804B and DG5833: keep the references separate
Our watches use the DG3804. That is the reference covered by the VWM specifications in this article.
The DG3804B and DG5833 deserve a mention because they appear in the same area of the GMT parts market. However, a similar reference or a broad seller title is a poor basis for transferring specifications between movements.

The Horotec DG3804B catalogue entry demonstrates why the suffix matters when quoting a jewel count. The DG5833 is also sold under its own designation, as this GMT movement listing illustrates.
For a replacement, the practical questions extend beyond the name. The stem must meet the crown tube at the correct height. The dial feet must suit the movement. The date ring must line up with the window, the hands must fit their posts, and the completed stack must clear the dial and crystal.
Those are physical requirements. A seller's use of two movement names in one title does not establish that every part transfers between them.
Is the DG3804 a good movement?
It is a useful choice when the brief is an affordable automatic watch with a working second time zone. It offers the functions an owner interacts with most: winding, hacking, a date and independent adjustment of the GMT display.
The finished watch still needs careful assembly. A fourth central hand adds another layer above the dial. Clearance has to be correct between the GMT hand and the hour markers, between successive hands, and beneath the crystal. A hand that touches another surface can interfere with running even when the movement itself is capable of keeping time.
This is visible in practical work on the calibre. In tickingWATCH's DG3804 assembly and testing video, the hand-fitting sequence specifically addresses clearance around the GMT hand and between the hands. The same video examines how securely the movement sits in its case. These are useful things to look for when judging a build.
Service support belongs in the purchase decision too. A DG3804 can be dismantled and serviced, but the appropriate repair depends on the fault, parts availability and labour cost. On an inexpensive mechanical movement, a watchmaker may compare servicing with replacing the complete unit. The replacement still has to match the watch's actual fittings.
For a buyer, a clear movement reference, a stated inspection process and a seller who can handle a fault are more useful than an isolated photograph of a very small timing number. For a builder, checking the complete hand assembly and case fit deserves as much attention as getting the movement to run.
DG3804 versus NH34 and Miyota 9075
The closest practical comparison is the NH34. Both give you a separately adjustable 24-hour hand. The Miyota 9075 provides a useful contrast because it moves the independent adjustment to local time.

The NH34 specifications and GMT controls are documented by TMI and its NH34 operating manual. Miyota describes the 9075's independently adjustable local hour hand in its official specifications.
If you like the operating logic of an NH34 watch, the DG3804's caller arrangement will be familiar. That similarity does not make the movements interchangeable inside a case. A conversion needs the same checks of stem height, dial, date display, hand fittings and clearance as any other movement change.
The 9075 makes more sense as a comparison of use. Its attraction for frequent travel is being able to adjust the local hour separately. Its higher frequency is another difference, but it does not remove the need to assess the rest of the watch.

Why we use the DG3804 in THE PEPSI

THE PEPSI places a red GMT hand over a matte black dial, with a faded red-blue aluminium bezel around it. The ordinary hands have their own clear role, and the fourth hand reaches towards the scale it uses. That relationship between hand and bezel makes the extra function easy to understand.
The watch measures 39.5mm across the case, excluding the crown, and uses a domed mineral crystal and a five-link steel bracelet. Its aged finish comes from work on new components. The DG3804 supplies the automatic timekeeping and GMT function within that design.

DG3804 questions owners ask
Is the DG3804 a Seiko movement?
No. The DG3804 is a Chinese movement associated with the Mingzhu name. The NH34 and NH35 belong to the TMI/Seiko movement family. Choose parts using the actual calibre reference.
Does the GMT hand show morning and evening?
Yes. One revolution takes 24 hours, so 08:00 and 20:00 appear on opposite sides of the scale. That is one of the most useful differences between a GMT hand and an ordinary hour hand.
Why does the date change at noon?
The ordinary hands have been set twelve hours out. Use the time-setting position to advance them through a date change, which establishes midnight, then continue to the correct morning or afternoon time. Recheck the GMT offset afterwards.
Why does the GMT hand look wrong after moving the bezel?
The bezel is the scale used to read it. Return the triangle or 24 marker to 12 o'clock before checking the hand's original setting. If the offset is still wrong, adjust the GMT display using the first crown position.
Does it need a watch winder?
A winder is optional. You can let the watch stop between periods of wear, then wind and reset it when you want to use it again. Consider whether keeping the display running is worth the extra device in your own routine.
Can the date show the GMT time zone's date?
The calendar follows the ordinary time display. When your two locations are on different dates, the GMT hand shows the other location's hour, while the date window remains associated with local time. Keep that distinction in mind around midnight.
Who the DG3804 suits
